Moon Halo and Mars
Submitted by:
Beth Katz at Sun Feb 28 04:01:01 2010 UTC
My daughter saw this full moon halo through the skylight while brushing
her teeth and thought I'd like to see it. That's Mars at upper right.
Photo taken about 10:30pm EST on 27 February, 2010 from Lancaster
County, Pennsylvania. The tree is a dawn redwood. 4 second exposure. ISO

Pre-Groundhog Day Sunset
Submitted by:
Beth Katz at Wed Feb 3 22:34:01 2010 UTC
Driving home past the fields of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, we
observed this gorgeous sunset. My daughter took several pictures with my
iPhone, so she gets the copyright. I'm sure there are groundhogs in
those field. The local one supposedly didn't see his shadow on February
2nd, but we had over three inches of snow on February 2-3. Photo taken

January Rainbow - 25 January 2010
Submitted by:
Beth Katz at Tue Feb 2 04:25:01 2010 UTC
We've had wacky weather. It was 62F yesterday. The rain was moving off
when I glanced out the window. There was this bit of bright rainbow. In
January. It disappeared within a few minutes. The warm weather is
fading, too. Lancaster County, Pennsylvania about 2:45pm EST on 25
January, 2010. Copyright (c) 2010 Beth Katz, katz@cs.millersville.edu.
By the way, yes, the forum seems to be broken. I'm not sure what's being
done about it. I've reported it as best I can.

Orion and ISS - 22 January 2010
Submitted by:
Beth Katz at Sat Jan 23 00:06:01 2010 UTC
I grabbed the camera and family to catch a bright (-3.4) flyover of the
International Space Station. I should have noted that it would appear to
go past Orion. Drat; there are clouds. But I caught it anyway with
trees. It was about 6pm EST on Friday, 22 January 2010. This is an
8-second exposure. There are several extra "stars" because my camera has
many bad pixels. Check out Heavens-Above (http://www.heavens-above.com/)
for your opportunity to catch such moments. Copyright (c) 2010 Beth

Halo complex - 18 December 2009
Submitted by:
Beth Katz at Sat Dec 19 01:36:01 2009 UTC
We have a snowstorm coming in and had a spectacular natural halo complex
this afternoon. This picture was taken with my iPhone and shows a
circumzenithal arc, supralateral arc (very faintly), upper tangent arc,
and colorful 22-degree halo. The halo went around the sun to the
horizon. There were also sun dogs and a bright blue glow at about 60
degrees around the parhelic circle. I have movies to capture it all and
better pictures on my camera. But this was probably the peak of the CZA
colors. From Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Copyright (c) 2009 Beth

Sundog and parhelic circle - 17 January 2009
Submitted by:
Beth Katz at Sun Jan 18 13:56:01 2009 UTC
It was cold (< 10F), but I saw this sundog and the parhelic circle
about noon 17 January 2009 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The
colors were rainbow rather than the usual sunrise/sunset sundogs. A
short time later, there was one on the other side, but my camera was
in the car at that point. When I got to the camera again, both were
gone. You can also see a bit of the 22-degree halo. Copyright (c) 2009

Mystery arc - 11 November 2008
Submitted by:
Beth Katz at Mon Nov 17 03:42:01 2008 UTC
This is a composite of two images with different exposure levels but
together they are what I was seeing in the sky. On the left is what I
believe is part of a superlateral arc. It had bright colors and was
concave. Maybe it was part of the 46-degree halo, but those are rare.
I tried various adjustments to enhance the left side, but wasn't
successful. 11 November 2008 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

Glitter path on the grass

It was a damp morning, and I wasn't expecting bright sunlight to peek
through the clouds. I was delighted to see a glitter path on the
grass. Many of these blades of grass have sun reflections on their
tips. 11 September 2008 about 7:12 am EDT in Lancaster County,

Spacecraft and planets - 5 November 2007
Submitted by:
Beth Katz at Mon Nov 5 20:07:01 2007 UTC
Shuttle Discovery (STS-120) had undocked from the International Space
Station less than 30 minutes before this photo, so they hadn't separated
noticeably in this 2 second exposure. They appeared to fly between
Saturn (upper right) and Venus and the Moon (below) as seen about 5:54
EST on 5 November 2007 from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The thin
clouds added texture to the sky. Nikon 4500, 2 second exposure, ISO 200.
