AGAIN...SAME PLACE!!!
Submitted by:
michel tournay at Tue Sep 22 04:02:01 2009 UTC
On Sept 17th 2009 at about 01:23 AM, I was taking pictures of Orion coming
out of the horizon...and again saw something passing by...and this time it
was slow!!! (The first time it was a spy satellite) The exposure time was 1
3 sec. at 8000 ASA
It took more than an hour and 143 pictures of 13 sec for that thing to go h
alf the sky before my memory card had no more space!
Can't be a satellite?...An asteroid?
The weird thing is that the length of the trail got very small when it got
above my head compared to when I started them at the horizon...so an ellipt
ic orbit?...Hmmm!
Enjoy!

Last Easter Monday, during an evening with the stars and suddenly, some gre
en and then some purple in the sky!...lets stay longer! It's nice to see th
at even in the solar minimum, the sun can still send us a few surprises!
Comet C/2009 F6 (Yi-SWAN) might be lost somewhere in those stars near Cass
iopeia!

LUCKY SHOTS INDEED!
Submitted by:
micheltournay@yahoo.ca at Mon Mar 23 09:41:01 2009 UTC
Wow, was I ever lucky to get those shots!
On March first, going down for my vacation from the "north pole", I decided
to make a "pit stop" in the pitch-black-sky of the Laverendrye parc to get
some shots of Lulin comet. Then I decided to aim my un-guided 300mm lens a
t the Orion nebula, trying different exposures and was amazed to see it wit
h only 3 sec exposures at 10 000 ASA! (love that Nikon D3!). Then it happen
ed: a small brownish trail of something was at the bottom of a picture! I c
ouldn't even see it with my eyes! Took another one, then another for a tota
l of 8. I thought a satellite at 10 000 ASA would have been white, right?
Don't believe that "E.T." would visit us! So what's left?...An asteroid? An
d if unknown, I would have to name it! I freaked out, phone my friend, the
famous astronomer Marc Jobin, who did some research with Calsky and told me
it was an American military satellite called: Milstar-3, was launched in 1
999, never reached its geostationary orbit, was never used and has an orbit
of 153 min.
So I did a composite of all 8 pictures and voilà! I also did a blow-up to
show that it turns showing brighter spots in the 3 sec exposure trail..coo
l!
Thank you Marc for the research...and destroying my chance to name an aster
oid!
Thank you Calsky people for helping Marc!
Thank you Guy (nikon rep.) for giving me the D3!
Enjoy!

THEY'RE BACK...AT -40
Submitted by:
michel tournay at Fri Feb 27 18:56:01 2009 UTC
Finally some colors in the sky! After weeks of clouds, not being able
to see the comet C/2007 N3 Lulin, we had a break yesterday... but a
freezing break! What the heck, I'll go just to see...and ended up
trying to take pictures at that temperature (Celcius or Fahrenheit, -40 is
the same
...dam cold!) the tripods head froze and it was hard to keep the camera
steady...but some greenish lights started, so I stayed longer! Can you
spot Andromeda between the 2 layers of auroras? It's true that patience
is a virtue...It helps
with a big parka, boots, big gloves...

MY GOD...IT WORKS!!!!!
Submitted by:
michel tournay at Fri Oct 26 08:39:01 2007 UTC
Have you ever wonder if the nice graphs on the net or softwares are good?
A few hours ago I went outside to take pictures of the 17P Holmes comet and I tried to superimpose part of a graph from a program called COELIX from Jean Vallières....WOW!...ITS VERY ACCURATE!
So all the white dots (in circles) and the comet are from my picture and the circles, dates and trajectory are from COELIX.
I blew up the "main course" to show, with 2 red arrows, the dates where the comet was (25th) and where it will be on the 27th. And low and behold the comet is right smack in the middle of them....that I took around midnight...on the 26th!
I am impressed!

LUNAR ECLIPSE CORONA?
Submitted by:
michel tournay at Mon Mar 5 04:35:01 2007 UTC
Lots of clouds during yesterdays lunar eclipse, but suddenly a break in the clouds gave me the chance to see the end of it and by doing a long exposure, I could see a bit of a corona around the still-eclipsed moon!!!!!
So I was "kinda" glad about the small clouds still present at that time!
I also like the reflection of the moon showing where I could see the shadow at that time!
