Submitted by:
Tom Eklund at Sun Aug 3 19:13:01 2008 UTC
Last week of July 2008 was packed full of nice to very nice NLC
displays, but the one on 31st night was a true masterpiece. One of the
best shows in past few years for me.

Still one more shot from August 19/20 display. When glorious start was over,
the display got more modest appearance, but still offered some pretty serene
sights later in the night.

August 19/20 display had a great start, but i made mistakes and also lucked it
out at the same time. When film was changed and aperture was set to correct
numbers, these were still lingering at the sky

December 14/15 major geomagnetic storm did not bring all engulfing colorful
corona show, but it did some rare high lat. style formations to the high middle
latitudes and some of those moments were pretty impressive!

Russian barbeque

Summer of 2006 was extremely dry also in the other side of the Finland /
Russia border and massive forest fires were raging on the Russian side
throughout most of the summer. Here is picture from downtown Helsinki engulfed
in pure forest fire smog coming couple hundred kilometers away from the Russian
fires.

Summer of 2006 was very dry in southern Finland. Dry with historical
proportions. So when some rain and thunder finally was in sight, i of course
had to go and spot some of it.

Coronal hole stream with Bz values near -20 for hours created this short
but impressive and large auroral substorm. This was also my first decent
to good aurora since April 2004, which did not get clouded out in the
middle of the observation...usually just before the substorms. I can't
say i would be utterly disappointed. ;-D

Quite red scene and rainbow from one evening in the "summer" of 2004.
Well, 2004 had no summer...That year the autumn started right after May
and lasted all the way into the January of 2005.

First big NLC display of 2005 for me. This display would have been one
of the best of all times, if it just had happened 10-15 days later. Now
our night skies were still bit too bright for these creatures.

Subvisual aurora in 2001 or 2002
Submitted by:
Tom Eklund at Wed Jan 26 13:00:01 2005 UTC
On this evening there wasn't any strong aurora visible at any time, but at
one point definite faint greys glow seemed to grow from the north. I
thought that it might turned out be red, if i expose it long enough and it
did. Exposure was 30 sec, if i remember right, and the lens f/2.0 28mm with
provia 400F.

9th nov. 2004 red pulsating arc
Submitted by:
Tom Eklund at Thu Nov 11 22:24:01 2004 UTC
During all these huge storms i got maybe hour or two of clear skies.
Fortunately part of my clear skies were during the huge substorm of 9th
of nov. The substorm was not the best i have seen, but i have never seen
a pulsating red arc before. That was something completely new to me. The
direction of the photo is towards the southwest or so.

Thunder and northern lighting 3.
Submitted by:
Tom Eklund at Thu Sep 2 15:04:01 2004 UTC
22nd of August 2004 i got chance to witness something not too usual around here. During the evening the weather got clear and revealed couple distant thunderclouds with active lightning. After watching this distant lightning in the west for an hour or so, faint auroras suddenly appeared to the north. During couple moments the aurora got close enough to the thunder that i could, for the time in my life, witness couple of clear lightning bolts at the same time when seeing aurora. Unfortunately i had only 100ASA film and also the lightning died out as it closer to aurora, so i didn't manage to catch any bolts and lights into the same frame, but at least here are few rays and flashes in the same pics..
