Sun corona with iridescence

Submitted by: Beth Katz at Sun Dec 18 15:49:01 2005 UTC

The colors in these clouds were beautiful but finding a way to block the sun was difficult. I need more yard ornaments. :-) Be *very* careful doing this. I have other pictures that have more sun because I was estimating where the sun, the blocking mailbox, and the corona was without looking through the viewfinder. The monitor was hard to see in such bright light. Photo with Nikon Coolpix 4500 on automatic. 17 December 2005 about noon in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Tall sun dog with halo

Submitted by: Beth Katz at Fri Feb 22 01:46:01 2008 UTC

This tall bright sun dog and halo combination faded quickly while I ran into the house to grab the camera. It was impressive and brighter than what this photo shows. About 5:30pm EST 21 February 2008 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Copyright 2008 by Beth Katz, katz@cs.millersville.edu.

Circumzenithal Arc - 13 January 2008

Submitted by: Beth Katz at Sun Jan 13 20:28:01 2008 UTC

This circumzenithal arc existed for only a few minutes as cirrus clouds pushed in with rain and maybe snow behind them. Photo taken about 2:40 pm EST, January 13, 2008 in Lancaster County, Pennslyvania. Copyright 2008 Beth Katz, katz@cs.millersville.edu.

Spacecraft and planets - 5 November 2007

Submitted by: Beth Katz at Mon Nov 5 20:07:01 2007 UTC

Shuttle Discovery (STS-120) had undocked from the International Space Station less than 30 minutes before this photo, so they hadn't separated noticeably in this 2 second exposure. They appeared to fly between Saturn (upper right) and Venus and the Moon (below) as seen about 5:54 EST on 5 November 2007 from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The thin clouds added texture to the sky. Nikon 4500, 2 second exposure, ISO 200. Copyright 2007 Beth Katz, bethkatz@comcast.net.

Comet 17/P Holmes has changed the appearance of Perseus. This picture shows the naked eye and low power evening view. The left panel shows Cassiopeia and Perseus while the right one zooms in to the comet in Perseus. The comet is the greenish "star" at the lower left of the picture on the right. Shuttle Atlantis (STS-117) trailed by the International Space Station pass the overexposed Moon. An airplane joined the picture and my husband said it would be cheating to erase it. Saturn, Moon, and Venus above Oak Tree

Submitted by: Beth Katz at Tue Jun 19 15:51:01 2007 UTC

Saturn, the Moon, and Venus the next evening above an oak tree. I wanted a matching dogwood picture, but the wind made the leaves too blurry. 18 June 2007 about 9:22 pm EDT in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Nikon Coolpix 4500, 1 sec, f 3.7, ISO 400. Sun Pillars - 28 Feb and 01 March 2007

Submitted by: Beth Katz at Thu Mar 1 21:51:01 2007 UTC

Two days in a row I've had sun pillars at sunrise in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The photo on the left is from 7:05am 28 Feb, 2007. The sun was higher above the horizon and there was some iridescence in the clouds. The photo on the right is from 6:46am 01 March. The pillar is more of a fan. Trio of Arcs - 3 December 2006

Submitted by: Beth Katz at Sun Dec 3 22:31:01 2006 UTC

From top to bottom we see a circumzenithal arc, a Parry arc, and an upper tangent arc. There were also sun dogs in this display. The arcs would come and go in intensity but were best when I went for a walk without my camera. From Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. 1pm with sun about 26 degree altitude. Nikon Coolpix 4500 on automatic but exposure bias -2. Copyright 2006 by Beth Katz, katz@cs.millersville.edu.

Sun halo around local noon

Submitted by: Beth Katz at Thu May 4 20:55:01 2006 UTC

This 22 degree sun halo had more color than is shown here, but it faded while I ran in to grab my camera. I don't think I had ever seen so much color in a 22 degree halo. It was around local noon and the sun was rather high in the sky (about 64 degrees according to http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/AltAz.html). Nikon Coolpix 4500 on automatic with photo cropped in iPhoto with no other adjustments. Copyright 2006 by Beth Katz, katz@cs.millersville.edu.

Moon as Buckle in Belt of Venus

Iridescence near sun

Submitted by: Beth Katz at Sun Dec 18 16:05:01 2005 UTC

The colors in these clouds were beautiful, and I could see most of the ones here by blocking the sun with my hand. Be *very* careful taking such pictures. Moon Corona - 14 Nov 2005

Submitted by: Beth Katz at Tue Nov 15 19:49:01 2005 UTC

This picture doesn't quite capture the beauty of the moon among these clouds. Mars is hiding here. Picture taken at 22:09 UTC 14 November 2005 from 76.4 W 40 N with a Nikon Coolpix 4500. 1/3 seconds, f 3, ISO 400 (camera on automatic). Copyright Beth Katz - katz@cs.millersville.edu.

Sunset - 1 June 2005

Submitted by: Beth Katz at Thu Jun 2 13:37:01 2005 UTC

The sun lit many different layers of clouds here. I couldn't capture the deep red of the distant clouds to the right of the sun well enough to do them justice. Sundogs 1 June 2005

Submitted by: Beth Katz at Thu Jun 2 12:50:01 2005 UTC

Individually, each sundog was brighter at various times during this display, but getting them both in the picture with the sun appropriately hidden became a challenge. Two halos 12:33 19 May 2005

Submitted by: Beth Katz at Fri May 27 00:46:01 2005 UTC

This is an hour after the first picture. The 22 degree halo is at the top. The second halo is more centered on the sun and more obviously elliptical. I have more pictures, but it was strange to see what seemed to be a "rare" elliptical halo the same day one was featured on the Earth Sciences Picture of the Day. If you have ideas, contact me at Beth Katz, katz@cs.millersville.edu. These pictures are copyrighted by Beth Katz 2005.

Two halos 11:19 19 May 2005

Submitted by: Beth Katz at Fri May 27 00:32:01 2005 UTC

This was a good day for halos in our area. I had a very good 22 degree sun halo, but my camera doesn't have a wide enough lens to capture it. The 22 degree halo is near the leaves; it was complete. I'm wondering about the other partial halo here. It seems elliptical, and I'm not sure where its center is. This was about 11:19am. Next picture is an hour later. If you have ideas, contact me at Beth Katz, katz@cs.millersville.edu.

Sun Pillar - 25 February 2005

Submitted by: Beth Katz at Thu Jun 2 13:07:01 2005 UTC

I was shoveling snow with very light snow falling as the sun rose. This sun pillar was better and seemed taller earlier, but I had to go in and get the camera. Photo with Nikon Coolpix 4500, 1/84 sec, f 4.2, ISO 100. Copyright 2005 Beth Katz, katz@cs.millersville.edu.

Morning Planets - 20 Dec 2004

Submitted by: Beth Katz at Mon Dec 20 12:31:01 2004 UTC

Mercury, Venus, and Mars line up before sunrise. Venus and Mercury will get closer over the next week. Jupiter is much higher up and Saturn is over with Castor and Pollux in the west. Photo with Nikon Coolpix 4500, 1 second, f 2.6, ISO 400. Copyright 2004 Beth Katz, katz@cs.millersville.edu.

Planets and moon through clouds - 8 Dec 2004

Submitted by: Beth Katz at Thu Dec 9 03:39:01 2004 UTC

The clouds were a problem getting this shot before Mars was lost in the early morning light. As it is, I'm missing Spica here. Lower left to upper right, we see Venus, Mars, alpha Lib, the Moon, and Jupiter. I'm hoping for a better picture on the 9th. Photo with Nikon Coolpix 4500, 1 second, f 2.6, ISO 400.
