Zenith 1 11/20/03
Submitted by:
Arthur Howard at Wed Nov 26 02:05:01 2003 UTC
This is one of many shots I got on the night of November 20th.It was a
battle of will and patience between myself and the thick clouds that
kept rolling in.It was cold and windy.
Just as I was about to give up a big clear opening came in at about
10:45 local time and just then the aurora that was just a glow
exploded. It was 360* around and from horizon to zenith for 45
minutes.Such zenithal displays are rare here in central Minnesota and
was a welcomed treat.
All pictures on Nov 20 were taken with an Olympus OM-2n and a 28mm
f/2.8 Zuiko wide open and Fuji Superia 800

The aurora was hardly visible except for the bright spots at the bottom
of the rays
The picture is grainy because of something in the processing.Only two
of my pictures came out like this thankfully.

RE:Illusion explanation
Submitted by:
Arthur Howard at Tue Aug 12 19:17:02 2003 UTC
This is a diagram to explain the phenomenon taking place in the
"Illusion" picture in my gallery..
A retired oceanographer friend of mine in Russia sent it to me.Thanks
Andrew.
I guess I was lucky to get the shot because conditions have to be
perfect and are fairly rare.Has anyone else got any pictures of this
phenomonon?
Here in short is his explanation::
"I'm sure about stratification zone above. The plain cloud tops speak
about. So darker sky is due to light coming from space and lighter sky
is formed by rays coming from sunset."
