Clearing Skies and Darkening Moon

Submitted by: Remi Boucher at Tue Nov 2 02:12:01 2004 UTC

Taken at Mont-Megantic on 2004 October 27th from 21:16 to 22:45 (local). The clouds were quickly clearing as the moon began to pass in the penumbra. Only a few contrails were still there for the beginning of the partiality phase. This image is a composite of 10 pictures and shows the partial phase and the first part of the totality phase.

Details : Nikon D70, f/5.9, 30sec. for background and 1/250 to 4sec. for partiality at 200ISO.

Why is there so many planes in the sky

Submitted by: Remi Boucher at Sun Oct 10 01:49:01 2004 UTC

Apparently, all these planes were coming from Europe and were passing over Sherbrooke to avoid the jet-stream. Many people in town noticed this unusual aerial traffic over our heads. I took this picture in Infra-Red (IR) with my digital camera and a special filter to block the visible light and collect only the IR light (invisible for the human eye). IR light gives a better contrast between clouds and blue sky. I counted 25 contrails in this picture.

Details : Nikon Coolpix 4500, 88A filter, f/2.9, 1sec., at 200ISO

A cumulonimbus was passing north while the almost full moon was shining in the southern sky. The two red lights on the left are on a radio antenna on the top of the Mont-St-Joseph, part of the Mont-Megantic mountains complex. Three hours before, a lightning striked on this antenna.

July Thunderstorm I

Submitted by: Remi Boucher at Wed Jul 7 20:04:01 2004 UTC

Taken near Mont-Megantic on 2004 july 1st. From 6pm to 2am we had several lightnings striking all around. For a long time, we had clear skies with stars just overhead and cumulonimbus with lightnings on north, south, east and west. Probably the most ďphotogenic thunderstormĒ Iíve ever seen. Iíve never catch so many lightnings.

Venus Transit : Balck Dot, Red Lace

Submitted by: Remi Boucher at Sat Jun 12 03:34:01 2004 UTC

I didn't use any filter to take this dramatic view of the transit of Venus. In fact, a very short exposure combined with the low altitude of the sun allowed me to capture the famous black dot on the sun with the red lace of the clouds.

Venus Transit : The Third Contact

Submitted by: Remi Boucher at Sat Jun 12 19:19:01 2004 UTC

This part of the transit of Venus is called "the third contact". It was precisely at this moment that I really "felt" the beauty of this rare event. This wasn't only a round black dot on the sun, it was a planet, nearly as big as earth, moving in front of the sun... cool!

Details : Nikon Coolpix 4500 at 400ISO trought a 10"Schmidt-Cassegrain with H-alpha filter and a 26mm eyepiece.

Moonrise : 2004 june 5

Submitted by: Remi Boucher at Wed Jun 9 05:03:01 2004 UTC

On june 5th, I was out to see if there was aurora in the sky. I didn't saw any aurora on that night so I decided to illustrate the change of color and brightness of the rising moon. I took many pictures every 3 minutes during 45 minutes, but I only combined 6 of them to get a better look of the changing moon.

Details : Nikon Coolpix 4500, f/5.1, 8sec., at 200ISO
