Proton Arc 7-11-05
Submitted by:
Lorie at Tue Jul 12 12:19:01 2005 UTC
I believe this is a Proton Arc, although correct me if I'm wrong--loriek@direcway.com. It was visible right at zenith, going from east to west, for at least 1 1/2 hrs while I observed it. It brightened, at one point, which is when I realized it was not a lingering "contrail". This is shot with the orange of the setting crescent moon visible.

Just when I stepped out at 9:15 pm CDT, it was already in progress with this
nice high arc, but quickly quieted down to a large glow with some small
beams. This was the most photographically worthwhile picture, although I
took several more.

This is the best I could come up with on this night. I had just missed a
nice curtain at about 9:00, but couldn't get properly set up in time to
capture it. By 10:00 pm there were no more features worth sitting up for.

This is the 1st pic taken this morning. A longer exposure to test the sky
for green. About a 2 min exposure, as evidenced by the stars trailing. Also
a satellite can be seen streaking through from the right top of picture. A
foggy start to the aurora viewing morning. 20mm lens, 2 min. Iso 200.
