1/2 Oct. 2002

Submitted by: Tom Eklund at Fri Oct 10 17:10:02 2003 UTC

One slightly overexposed picture from the magic 1/2th of Oct. 2002. Now as the auroral activity is seemingly winding down considerably, it seems that this wonderful show could very well end up being my best show of this solar cycle. It was not the brightest or the biggest or the most colorful, but it had enough almost everything and that made it so very special. Tens of times per cycle we see a great shows in progress.....500-800 km north of us. This was the only time i remember, when those highly detailed belts and bands really moved south...for a little longer period of time. It was the night when high latitude moved few hundred km southward and didn't end up being just a diffuse mess.

Red Belly Belts 3.

Submitted by: Tom Eklund at Thu Oct 2 18:36:02 2003 UTC

These red belly belts were seen above most of the Finland on 24/25 of September 2003. This gave also a good lesson for any mid lat. aurora watcher, since the red belly belts seen in these photos were maybe about +800 km away from my location. Also, i must say that these reds were maybe the brightest reds that i have ever seen on the lower edge of the aurora here.

Fogbow

Submitted by: Tom Eklund at Thu Sep 25 16:41:01 2003 UTC

10th of September the morning was extremely misty in most parts of southern and central Finland. On that morning i was also starting my drive to Lapland and during the drive had opportunity witness several fogbows. Several of them were quite awesome! Luckily i managed to snap a picture of one those and here's the pic.... These fogbows were my first since the year 2000.

18th of August aurora

Again 18th of August aurora, but this time with slide film. This display alone made August a pretty good aurora month, but....what happened on 18/19th night was able to make it very good! Thanks to the moon, the colors in the pics are quite nice.

Last night we had a pretty decent show, which was also my best since last October. Because of +10 to +20 Bz early in the evening i thought i would have to wait very long and probably get very nice show. Yet, the show begun right after it became dark. After first 2 hours i decided that maybe it's time to try me new photo place some 30 min away. Surprisingly the show was not over when i got there and i got an opportunity to try some new views....

Strong bolt hitting the water

Submitted by: Tom Eklund at Thu Aug 7 09:41:01 2003 UTC

Same storm as before and a strong (cropped) bolt hitting water few kilometers away. Storm was generating visible bolts every 1-3 second for extensive period of time and large a Mammatus clouds were hanging above our heads most of the time.

On the 4th of August 2003 a long lasting intensive lightning storm got it's engines going just south from here and gave some good photo opportunities. Yet again many things went wrong, but this time i at least got few decent shots.

Best shelf cloud of my life

Submitted by: Tom Eklund at Tue Aug 5 23:34:01 2003 UTC

On Tuesday i got a call from a friend, he let me know that a amazing shelf cloud was there and that i should be out by now. In a matter of seconds i was out and....the shelf was enormous, awesome, menacingly beautiful! A best shelf cloud to date for me. The movement of the scuds and other stuff under the shelf was just insane (for a person who doesn't happen to live on a Tornado Alley) AND the clouds were literally sweeping the treetops!!! Maybe not the Independence day part 2, but still just an unbelievable sight and experience!

Best NLC's in two years here...

Submitted by: Tom Eklund at Sat Aug 2 23:09:01 2003 UTC

One more pic of this display. Even that prefer to see great aurora before NLC's. I still kind of feel that a good NLC displays are actually the most beautiful things that i have ever witnessed on the night skies. The beauty of the sharp shining waves, stripes, nets, spirals and else is very hard to describe, but at their best NLC's are true and magnificent crystal castles in the sky. Well, this was not a such great display, but very beautiful despite of that!

Best NLC's in two years here...

Submitted by: Tom Eklund at Sat Aug 2 22:56:01 2003 UTC

Finally on the night between 1st and 2nd of August we got some decent NLC's. Not much good structure, but otherwise the NLC's were quite wide (about 90 degrees) and very bright! Best show since the massive displays of July 2001. This time they actually lived up to their name and shined on the night sky. :-)

Few days ago there was a weak thunder shower near my home. It had a pretty nice shelf cloud with wonderful dark colors on it's leading edge, but i didn't get a picture of that. Then, under the shelf there was this quite impressive "whale's mouth" kind of stuff...

During the last few years there has been many red coronas, but as far as the intensity of the red goes few of those coronas are unmatched. The most overpowering coronas of the grand display of 5/6th of November were about as red as they can get. Here's one of those almost menacing coronas.

Twilight magic part 2.

Submitted by: Tom Eklund at Wed Jun 18 09:41:01 2003 UTC

The night between the first and the second of October 2002 was full action and aurora magic. The show that started around midnight was clearly the most beautiful, the most graceful one that i have ever seen. Yet, hours before the real show begun, the aurora was already cruising above still VERY bright horizon...As an promise for the future.

Eclipse shadows from the side of shed from this morning. I was hoping for some thin clouds or mist for some scenery shots from the eclipse itself, but didn't got those. The weather was nice and bright, but the sun was way too bright for any single exposure scenic eclipse shots from the sun itself. Well, at least finally i was able to find these shadows and they were quite cool. :-)
