At last, after 17 months of waiting, we finally had good aurora again in the Netherlands. This scene was photographed near Schermerhorn, some 40 kilometers north of Amsterdam, with a 20 mm lens at f/4 and 30 seconds exposure at Kodak Supra 800 at 1600 IS O. copyright Jan Lameer more details at www.angelfire.com/movies/timelapse

far away aurora in totem forest

Submitted by: jan karel lameer at Sat Jul 19 20:27:01 2003 UTC

I took this picture in the night of 28 August 2001 on the island of Terschelling (Netherlands). It was a true dark night and the aurora was visible low over the horizon all night. Even with full dark adaptaion no colors were seen visually, only a whitish glow that became brighter at times. The photograph shows subtle colors though. The trees in the foreground are dead because seawater has killed their roots. It is a very special part of the forest that I enjoy to be in at night, although at times it can be a little spooky.

The picture was exposed for 20 seconds on a Nikkor 50 mm f/1,4 lens on Kodak Portra 800. copyright 2001 Jan Karel Lameer www.angelfire.com/movies/timelapse
