Road to the Aurora
Submitted by:
John Burt at Wed Aug 20 09:36:01 2003 UTC
I was trying to catch the reflection of the aurora in the river, when I
thought the headlights of a passing car on the bridge ruined my photo.
Instead I think it made a neat effect. Fuji NPZ 800 asa, 28mm lens at
f2.5 for 20 secs.

Looking To Invercargill 18/8/03
Submitted by:
John Burt at Wed Aug 20 09:36:01 2003 UTC
This was a lot more impressive visually. The biggest problem was avoiding the cloud. Fuji NPZ 800 asa, 28mm lens at f 2.5
for 15 - 20 secs.

Watertower and Aurora 18/6/03
Submitted by:
John Burt at Thu Jun 19 12:35:02 2003 UTC
This photo was taken almost at the centre of town (Invercargill, New
Zealand 46 degrees South). The Watertower is not directly illuminated -
all the light is provided by the local light pollution. Howerver the
aurora was still bright enough to be seen t hrough it all. 24mm lens at
f2.5 on Kodak supra 400 for approx 10 seconds.

Burning Skies At Lands End

The moon was full, yet its light could not dampen the fire in the sky.
Photo taken at Stirling Point, Bluff, New Zealand. 28mm lens at f2.5,

A Rainbow Of Southern Fire
Submitted by:
John Burt at Thu May 8 11:37:01 2003 UTC
This Auroral Arc appeared in the sky as darkness fell. This photo is a
composite of 5 photos and spans approximately 120 degrees, centered due
south. The island on the ocean is Stewart Island, whose Maori name is
Rakiura which I am told translates to "Burning Skies" in english.

April Rays
Submitted by:
John Burt at Thu May 8 11:25:02 2003 UTC
From the 8th of April this year. Fuji NPZ 800 asa, 28mm lens at f 2.5
for 15 - 20 secs. I missed the best part of this diplay, but still got
the camera set-up before the fire in the sky had completely died.

Rays Of Venus
Submitted by:
John Burt at Thu Jan 16 06:02:01 2003 UTC
This photo was taken on 4 October 2002 at approx 10pm NZ standard time
(UT + 12 hours). The bright star low in the west is Venus. I was out
observing with my telescope when a ray appeared in the south. I got out
my camera, and then a green picket fence aurora formed almost due west,
with rays doing a small side-to-side dance. The display lasted for about
15 minutes, then all went quiet again. Exposure was 20secs on Fuji 800
NPZ film, with a Tamron 28mm lens at f 2.5.

Face In The Sky
Submitted by:
John Burt at Tue Jan 14 09:37:01 2003 UTC
This was the aurora in the early morning of 2 October 2002. When I
looked up at the corona it almost seemed as if there was face in sky,
staring back at me.

Corona 2/10/02
Submitted by:
John Burt at Sat Oct 5 08:53:01 2002 UTC
This was taken at 13.00 UT 2 OCT 02, from just outside Otautau,
Southland, New Zealand. I'm told that for those not familiar with the
aurora it helps to try and frame a terrestrial object in the shot.
Lacking a radio mast or nice tree nearby I had to settle for a telephone
pole.
28mm lens at f 2.8, 25-30secs on Fuji NPZ 800
