Under similar belts like this one, there must have been glorious corona formation up north and...there was. So they say, men and women of the big north. Here in south Finland there was "just" these belts, many many many of them that evening.

Great Red Aurora of 5th of November 2001

Submitted by: Tom Eklund at Sun Sep 29 20:20:01 2002 UTC

Like many others, i thought that the aurora would mostly happen on a next night, which would have been 6/7th night for me. Yet i decided to wait and see what 5/6th night would offer and it sure paid off. I remember quite clearly how all looked promising at the beginning, then clouds, then....some red, red and more red. When the sky at the zenith and at the south turned red....It was time for me to admit that the storm obviously had begun and that it sure looked quite big....quite a lot bigger than what i had expected! :-)

This was one of the most impressive NLC display that i have witnessed over the years. A true crystal castles in the sky type of display.

7/8 Sep. monster corona winding up.

This is the corona what was soon to become "the corona from hell". At this point it's already little too bright for f/2.0, 8 sec and 400 ISO, but little after this....it overexposed the shots as severely as possible. I have never got so totally overexposed aurora pics before as I did now...when shooting "the corona from hell"!!!! ;-)
