Halo, pillar and sun dogs - Jan.27, 2004

Submitted by: Stan Richard at Tue Feb 3 22:00:01 2004 UTC

A beautiful halo surrounds the sun and sun dogs fire at 22░ on each side, pillar extending upwards. Atmospheric conditions were perfect for this rare optical illusion- clear skies, below zero temperatures and ice crystals floating in the atmosphere from the previous day's snowfall. As the sun rose higher, the sun dogs were as almost as bright as the sun itself. Photo taken with Canon EOS300D.
