Comet Ikeya-Zhang and the ISS April 9th 2002

Submitted by: Carol Lakomiak at Tue Oct 15 04:25:01 2002 UTC

Out for a comet shoot, I was extremely lucky to capture the ISS cruising directly over it. Featured on APOD April 26th 2002 ( http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap020426.html ), this was taken 20 minutes after my Venus Pillar photo. Talk about being in the right place at the right time! Submitted by: Carol Lakomiak at Wed Oct 9 04:10:01 2002 UTC

Special thanks to my Hubby for making Christmas dinner while I was in and out of the house filming. The temperature during the four hour shoot was -20. Thankfully the scope, camera and photographer all pulled through without damage or frostbite. Prime focus, 90mm ETX, Olympus OM-1n, Fuji 800, 1/1000 sec. Carol Lakomiak. Autumn Zodiacal Light

Submitted by: Carol Lakomiak at Sun Oct 6 05:43:01 2002 UTC

This photo was taken prior to sunrise on September 15th, 2002. The bright sphere is Jupiter. Above it hovers the Praesepe open cluster. The zodiacal light is a faintly illuminated cone of light near the horizon, caused by the Sun's reflection off of interplanetary dust. Clear, dark skies are needed to detect it with the naked eye after sunset in the Spring and just before dawn in the Autumn.
