October 4 2002 Auroral Arc

Submitted by: SherryB at Sat Oct 5 00:04:02 2002 UTC

This strong auroral arc formed directly overhead, and stretched from below Lyra in the west, through Andromeda before tapering out in the eastern sky. This arc rippled and flowed overhead for nearly 45 minutes before slowly fading from view. Third night of auroral activity this week...amazing for here in the Aurora-Proof Zone. ;) Copyright Sherry Buttnor, Metchosin BC Canada. Details: Nikon FE/Tamron 28mm @ f/2.5. Kodak MAX 400 ~15 sec exposure.

The continuing aurora storm; photographed from a lookout 300 meters over Saanich Inlet. The Lights were bright enough to overcome the light pollution of Vancouver BC, in the background. October 1 2002 Aurora 2

Another photo, looking northwest. Although overall this was a moderate event, I was amazed at the horizontal scale; over 100 degrees is azimuth. For over two hours straight, there was auroral activity somewhere along the north horizon. Camera: Nikon FE/Nikkor 50mm @ f/2.8. Fuji Superia 800 Xtra. Copyright Sherry Buttnor, Metchosin BC Canada. Even through moonlight and marine layer mist, the display was better than expected. Green and red colors were noticeable visually. Nice little show! Camera: Nikon FE/Nikkor 50mm @ f/2.8. Morning Halo

For a few days in May 2002, we were treated to some lovely solar haloes. Haloes are comparatively rare here. The local media were flooded with calls from people wondering what the ring around the sun was. Suggestions ranged from chemtrails to aliens. Really. Sheesh... Leonid Starfield

Submitted by: SherryB at Fri Mar 21 01:30:01 2008 UTC

Having just missed photographing that nice bright earthgrazer, I was hoping to get at least a few lesser Leonids on film. I managed to capture these three meteors in the wee hours of November 18, 2001. For my efforts (luck) I was awarded a NASA APOD (November 20, 2001), I still get complimentary emails about this one, which is something of a mystery to me. Nikon FE camera piggybacked on a B&L drive mount, 28mm Tamron lens @ f/2.5. ~10 min guided exposure. Kodak MAX 400 print film. Photo copyright Sherry Buttnor. Metchosin, BC, CANADA. N48.4 W123.6
