Noctilucent clouds and Aurora Borealis

Submitted by: Stan Richard at Fri Nov 8 17:27:01 2002 UTC

A rare glimpse of the NLC and Aurora. While on a fishing trip to NW Ontario in June of 2000, I captured this shot an hour after sunset on June 28, 7 days after the summer solstice and peak viewing time for NLC. Although somewhat obscurred by lower trophospheric clouds, you can plainly see the long tenuous white strands of the NLC above the horizon. If you look closely near the center of the photo, you can also see the delicate ribbing between the long strands, a tell-tale characteristic of NLC. I didn't realize it when I took the shot but the great aurora show my brother and I witnessed that evening had already started and I had captured it as well. I've been informed, and someone please correct me if I'm mistaken, this photo could be the only one from North America showing both phenomena together. Timo Leponiemi from Finland also has a few photos of the NLC and aurora, they can be viewed here: http://www.sci.fi/~fmbb/astro/photos/revontulet0008.htm#10 Photo details: 80mm lens @ f/3.5, exposed for 20 secs on Fuji HG1600 neg film.
