Let's Tango
Submitted by:
Ulrike Haug at Wed Oct 22 08:32:01 2003 UTC
On the night of the 16/17th October 2003, the lights were very vivid and
errupted in a Tango of a substorm. Here the purple edge of the green curtain
was not that intense yet, but as the tango continued and the partner bands
drifted apart, the right band turned into a bright and vivid purple.

Weather balloon launched
Submitted by:
Ulrike Haug at Thu Mar 27 23:19:01 2003 UTC
On the 5th of March shortly after moonset, the aurora picked up in activity.
The first part of the display showed quite a bit of red as Poker Flat
launched a balloon, leaving a red trail as it climbed, to check the winds.
Although the aurora was excellent, high winds in the upper altitude
prevented them from launching that night. More images can be viewed at

spring. The moon had not risen yet, thus the display was the center of
attention. You can view more images at www.AlaskaAurora.com Images are ©

Moose and Aurora
Submitted by:
Ulrike Haug at Mon Dec 2 09:06:01 2002 UTC
While photographing the aurora, I heard some crunching sound in the snow and
soon discovered the dark spots in the snow. Shining my lights let me realize
that a moose cow and calf were in the neighborhood, searching for food under
the aurora lit sky. What a treat! I kept my distance to both animals and
enjoyed their brief presence. © Ulrike Haug, www.AlaskaAurora.com

A quick glimpse that was taken during the brief aurora substorm that we saw
from Interior Alaska on the 23rd October 2002 (around 5:50 UTC 24.10.2002).
The lights became so bright that the ice and snow reflected the green color.

This beam was seen easily, but the aurora around it was not apparent to the
viewer. Photographed from the Knik River looking towards Pioneer Peak, the

Church and Aurora

It was after midnight and certainly in the ghostly hours as I took this
photo of the Russian church with a faint glow of the aurora behind it.
