Lights over "Lothlorien"

Submitted by: Stephen Voss at Sun Feb 1 09:07:01 2004 UTC

Lake Wakatipu in the lower South Island of New Zealand is the location

used for the fictional setting of Lothlorien in the "Lord of the Rings"

movies. This aurora was captured shortly after dusk on 4 November 2003

(around 1030UTC) - a short but bright display memorable for the intense

reds easily visible to the eye. 20mm f/1.8 lens, Kodak Supra 400 (old emulsion); exp. 20-25 secs

A "Neat" Aurora, 4 March 2003

Submitted by: Stephen Voss at Wed Mar 5 10:43:01 2003 UTC

Comet Neat (C/2002 V1) has now rounded the sun and is visible in the southern sky after sunset. This image was taken about 0920 GMT (10.20pm local time) on 4 March 2003 from Sandy Point, near Invercargill, New Zealand. My aim was to just observe the comet, so the unexpected appearance of 2-3 dim auroral rays perfectly framing the comet was a pleasant surprise. Photographic details: 50mm f/1.4 lens, Kodak Supra 400 negative film, 30 sec exposure. (c) Stephen Voss, stevoss@mac.com

This image is a fusion of 4 separate photographs of varying exposures (combined using layer masks in Photoshop) taken on 4 December 2002 from Ceduna, South Australia. We were very fortunate to have a break in the cloud at just the right time and place to grant us a splendid view of totality. (c) Stephen Voss Comments to stevoss@mac.com

Taken from Sandy Point on the outskirts of Invercargill around 10.00UTC (11 pm local time). 20mm f/1.8 lens, Kodak Supra 400 film, exposure 30-40 secs. I love this time of year - any photo looking south will show an inverted Southern Cross and the nearby Eta Carina nebula (dead centre, above the arc) More photos at http://homepage.mac.com/stevoss/Menu11.html Comments welcome to stevoss@mac.com (C) Stephen Voss
